He is not shy about hitting out at what he feels is unfair or misinformed reporting.
His latest battle with the press involves his proposal for a fence to be built along the Malaysian border to hinder movements of southern insurgents
He did not take kindly to suggestions by some in the media that the proposal was really aimed at increasing the army’s share of the national budget.
The national army chief did not name the media that irked him Tuesday morning, but he made his dissatisfaction clear
"The allegation is totally unacceptable," Gen Prayuth told reporters on Tuesday. "I made the proposal as a way to strengthen the border line. This has been done in other parts of the world. There must be a fence in some areas along the border, while other areas can be manned by soldiers or police.
Openly angry, Gen Prayuth continued: "How could these media think that the proposal was intended to get money to build a fence? Which part of their brain gave them this opinion? If they wanted to know they should ask me what I really meant. How could they assume that I said this because of that?"
The army chief said if the critics were soldiers they already knew the situation along the Malaysia border. The border line must be safeguarded with equipment, which could be a fence, or something else.
"I did not make the proposal because I want money," he repeated.
Gen Prayuth said the media should comment constructively. Otherwise people would be discouraged in their work.
He ended his brief tirade with this warning: "From now on I will look into comments and articles published by the media. When they cause damage to the country with bad comments, they must be held responsible," he said.

Do you hear me,
I'm talking to you
Across the water across the deep blue ocean
Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying
Boy I hear you in my dreams
I feel your whisper across the sea
I keep you with me in my heart
You make it easier when life gets hard
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
They don't know how long it takes
Waiting for a love like this
Every time we say goodbye
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you I promise you, I will
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
Lucky we're in love every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday
And so I'm sailing through the sea
To an island where we'll meet
You'll hear the music fill the air
I'll put a flower in your hair
Though the breezes through trees
Move so pretty you're all I see
As the world keeps spinning round
You hold me right here right now
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
I'm lucky we're in love every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday
